Tell us about your journey to becoming a holistic health advocate?

My journey began 5 years ago when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. At that time of my life, I was living on cheezits and diet coke, no joke. Her diagnosis was a wake up call; I knew I needed to change my ways if I was going to avoid the same fate. My mom is healthy now, thankfully, but she was a dietician and always the epitome of health in my mind, so I thought if she could get sick then I was pretty much doomed. I started researching preventative ways of eating and made a total shift in the way I looked at food and wellness. More recently, this past fall, I had the realization that even though I ate all the healthy things, I was still sick. I only have one functioning kidney and have had to take a bunch of antibiotics over the past several years. I think that in combination with eating gluten and dairy that don’t agree with my body, caused inflammation and damage to my gut wall that was causing me to have constant and severe allergy symptoms as well as digestive issues. Once I had this realization, it was easy to make the commitment to healing. I gave up alcohol and swapped it out for bone broth and yet again, made a total shift in the way I was eating and the results have been overwhelmingly positive. I didn’t get sick all winter, my constant allergy symptoms have dissipated I can breathe again; I lost weight, and I feel better than I have ever in my life. Now I’m inspiring others to join me in this healing journey and it’s really incredible. I’ve never felt more certain that I’m on the right path, and it all started coming together for me when I started truly listening and taking care of my own body. It is really true that you can’t help or heal others until you heal yourself.

What is your favourite treatment that you like to spoil yourself with?

Well, I treat myself to a mani pedi almost every week, does that count? I also love a good massage. My friend Faye is an amazing body worker (OmniRays Bodyworks) and I’m way past due for another session!

What do you do on a daily basis that you find keeps your life on track in a holistic way?

Yoga and meditation. Even if I meditate for only 2-3 minutes before bed I find it incredibly grounding, and there’s nothing better than a good yoga class to clear my mind. I try to journal daily, but that doesn’t always happen, even though I know the benefits are undeniable.

Where is your favourite place to nourish yourself?

Moon Juice. I’m obsessed with their golden tonic, rainbow seed crackers, and chaga donuts. They are one of the only brands around making medicinal food products, which is totally in line with what I’m trying to accomplish and it’s always nice to treat yourself to someone else’s creations!

What practice or treatment can’t you live without?

My bone broth! I start and end my day with a cup. In the morning I add apple cider vinegar and lemon to my chicken or veggie broth and I like to have a cup of beef broth before bed. It keeps me nourished and healthy! I couldn’t live without yoga either. I’m someone who can get stuck running around in my head, and yoga is essential for me to get into my body.

Who do you admire in the holistic world?

Oh that’s a tough one! Some people that come to mind are Donna Gates of Body Ecology, Amanda Chantal Bacon of Moon Juice, and Mickey Trescott of I’m also blessed to have clients and friends in this realm that inspire me daily. My friend Julien Elizabeth is am amazing health coach and yoga instructor, my client Talia Kahan is starting a cold brewed tea company and I am doing the branding & design. My friend and mentor, Sepideh is a vegan chef and her company is Mother Organica and she also has a non-profit I volunteer with that feeds the homeless in Venice called Dharma Kitchen. Just to name a few…

Tell us about your company and where we can find you?

My company is OWL Venice, which stands for One Whole Life, and we’re based in Venice, CA. We make healing broth elixirs made with the highest quality organic and local ingredients. We incorporate a wide range of roots, herbs, and vegetables with potent healing properties and our recipes change each week, depending on what’s in season. We just started offering a cleanse program that incorporates the three broths (chicken, beef, and veggie) and 3 of our nut/dairy/sugar/gluten free ‘milk’shakes. What do you find is the easiest way for you to connect to your holistically minded community?

Honestly, my holistically minded community is seamlessly integrated with my life and I’m super blessed in that way. My network of friends and clients in Venice are all super health conscious and amazing. I’ve really worked hard to build relationships with people that inspire me and keep me grounded, and now I find that’s honestly all that surrounds me. There’s nothing toxic in my life these days, whether that be substances, people, or situations. It’s really true that we shape our realities and I’ve been very selective about what I allow to enter mine.

Anything else you would like to add?

I hear a lot of people giving up on restoring their health before they even begin. After sharing my story, I find often the response is, well I couldn’t do that, or I couldn’t give that up. It’s not as hard as you think, but it is a choice. Once you make the commitment, you do the best you can, practice forgiveness and acceptance when you get off track, and hop right back on. Don’t wait until you need to make the change, we all have healing to do. The time to make the shift is now. My friend Julien says to me, ‘You never know how good you can feel, until you feel better.’ I find that to be true every day as I move farther along in my own healing journey. Join me!
